ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture involves the insertion of micro-thin needles at specific points on the body to unblock or promote the flow of Qi (pronounced “Chee”). Qi is an energy force that flows throughout our bodies even at the cellular level. Once blocked, or if undernourished, illness will manifest. This practice can be used to resolve or alleviate most diseases or disorders. While needles are used, the practice is nothing like getting a shot with a syringe. You may experience a prick similar in sensation to a bug bite. However, most often times there is no sensation at all.

(NOTE: Certain points can be more sensitive than others. We try not to use the painful points if not necessary, though there are times when they are most effective. If you are sensitive to needles, let us know and we’ll make sure to balance your comfort with your health goals.)

CHINESE HERBAL MEDICINE

When formulated by a trained practitioner, Chinese herbal medicine has a synergistic effect to restore the balanced functioning of the body. Careful diagnosis occurs through rigorous study of the patient’s health history, reviewing all body functions, and utilizing the traditional methods of pulse and abdominal diagnosis (fukushin). Using these factors to identify a patient’s overall “pattern of disharmony”, the practitioner chooses which herbal combinations are most appropriate for the patient’s condition. Chinese herbal formulas can be formulated and prescribed for any condition a patient might take a pharmaceutical or over the counter medication for, without creating undesirable side effects.

CUPPING

Cupping is an ancient Chinese therapy in which a cup is applied to the skin and the pressure in the cup is reduced (either by heat or suction) in order to draw and hold skin and superficial muscles inside the cup. Sometimes, while the suction is active, the cup is moved, causing the skin and muscle to be pulled. This is called gliding cupping.

Cupping is based on the meridian theory of the body. On the one hand, cupping removes any stagnation in the body and opens the meridians so that Qi can flow freely. On the other, it also helps rejuvenate certain meridians and organs that are not functioning at their best. Cupping has been proven to help activate the lymphatic system, promote blood circulation, and is ideal for deep tissue repair.

MOXIBUSTION

Moxibustion is a form of heat therapy that involves the burning of dried mugwort (moxa), a small, spongy herb, to facilitate healing. The technique may be used indirectly, in conjunction with acupuntcture, or applied directly to various points on the body to increase energy flow and circulation.

Moxibustion has been used throughout Asia for thousands of years; in fact, the actual Chinese character for acupuncture, translated literally, means "acupuncture-moxibustion." The purpose of moxibustion, as with most forms of traditional Chinese medicine, is to strengthen the blood, stimulate the flow of qi, and maintain optimal health.

GUA SHA

Gua sha is a healing technique of traditional East Asian medicine. Sometimes called ‘coining, spooning or scraping’, literal meaning "scraping sha-bruises", is a traditional Chinese medical treatment in which the skin is lightly scraped to produce minimal bruising.

This type of practice removes blood stagnation and has been proven to reduce inflammation and produce immune protective effects that persist for days following a single treatment. Gua Sha is ideal for immediate relief from pain, stiffness, fever, chill, cough, wheezing, nausea and vomiting.
